Work experience

1998 – up to date:
Director of Reproductive Medicine at AKESO, Gynaecology and Infertility center, Sochou 7, Psychiko, Athens 115 25. This is a position in reproductive endocrinology and infertility treatment. It includes clinical and scientific work in all aspects of assisted reproductive technologies. I am responsible for the daily management of the IVF program, and for the preservation of state authority directives for Assisted Reproduction.

The clinical activities include hysteroscopic and laparoscopic procedures (diagnostic and therapeutic) associated with infertility, full care, and delivery of 100 pregnant women per year. Participation in research activities of the center and clinical studies with international presentations.
M. Tsirigotis is a guest speaker at local and international conferences and has many publications.

November 1984 - October 1986

Resident Medical Officer during his military service. He served as:
  • Assistant Doctor in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at 251 Air Force Hospital, Athens, (21/01/85 to 30/04/85).
  • Doctor Sergeant of the Air Force, Air Force Base, Mati, Athens (01/05/85 to 10/28/86) This position provided an opportunity for the medical monitoring and treatment of military personnel, while working closely with the 251 Air Force Hospital.

November 1986 - March 1987

Clinical Attachment to Professor Dr N McIntyre and AK Burroughs, Liver Unit, Royal Free Hospital, Pond Street, London NW3 2QG.
This was my first acquaintance with the National Health Service and with the advanced work of the academic unit. It would also influence my decision regarding education in England. Experience in liver disease and clinical research were the main topics. The PhD on asymptomatic bacteriuria in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis was the result of this placement.

March 1987-July 1988

Training in General Surgery with Professor J. Androulakis, the University of Patra, Department of Surgery, Hospital-Saint Andreas, Patras, Greece. Working in the emergency department and having acquired an experience in abdominal surgery, as well as in some cases of gynecologic oncology. This position also included two outpatient clinics per week and teaching students.

September 1988 - December 1988

Clinical Attachment in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Academic Department, Royal Free Hospital, London NW3 2QG. Professor RW Shaw.
This period was an invaluable training for my further experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Knowledge in caring and managing obstetric and gynecological patients, along with teaching, out patient clinics, conferences, and presentations.

January 1989 - December 1990

Senior House Officer in Obstetrics & Gynaecology to Mr RA Harlow, Chase Farm Hospital, The Ridgeway, Enfield, Middlesex EN2 8JL
This was the first placement in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Hospital which had 650 beds with an average of 3,500 deliveries and 1500 gynecological follow-ups per year. The hospital was well equipped with cardiotocography, special care unit, neonatal unit, ultrasound and colposcopy. It was an excellent position, which provided extensive experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The duties included among other antenatal, childbirth and postpartum care of obstetric patients, and gynecological outpatient procedures with two sessions per week. During this placement, I passed the Part-I MRCOG examination for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecology.

January 1991 - November 1992

Registar in Obstetrics & Gynecology rotation every six months between Mr. JA Elias & C Young, and J. V Carr. Greenwich District Hospital, London SE10 9HE.
This was a busy place with a 1 in 3 on call. There was a rapid flow of patients with an average of 6000 births per year. Participation in clinics, teaching, and outpatient departments. I was responsible for monitoring patients in gynecological clinics, managing various inpatient cases and the execution of two major and minor gynecological and surgical sessions per week. I was also responsible for supervising the labor ward and hospital care for pregnant women. High-risk pregnancies were also part of the activities along with colposcopy, gynecologic oncology, obstetric ultrasound and amniocentesis list every week. Emphasis was given to the development of surgical skills with a range of specialized procedures, including Burch colposuspensions, sacrospinal colpopexies, and Whertheim hysterectomies. While working in Greenwich, I became a member of the Royal College with the first attempt (MRCOG)

December 1992 - December 1995

Research Fellow in Reproductive Medicine to Professor Ian Craft in London, Gynaecology & Fertility Centre, 112A Harley Street, London W1N 1AF
This position included clinical work in all aspects of assisted reproduction. The clinical and scientific research was also part of the training. Because of this training, I gained experience in all methods of assisted reproduction (clinical & laboratory techniques). I was also responsible for the egg donation and surrogacy programs. In addition, I had a laparoscopic and hysteroscopic operating list per week.

January 1996 - December 1997

Director of Reproductive Medicine at the London Gynaecology and Fertility Center, 112A Harley Street, London W1N 1AF
This full-time position included the diagnosis and treatment of infertile couples and all other IVF activities under my responsibility.
